During Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month in September, Cure Our Ovarian Cancer submitted our Health Select Committee Report to the Health Select Commitee for consideration. It is the culmination of more than a year and a half of research and consultation with affected people, researchers, doctors, nurses and other specialities.
At over 145 pages long, it represents the most comprehensive report on ovarian cancer ever published in New Zealand.
The report paints a damning picture of the current situation in New Zealand, and creates a compelling argument for significant changes in the way ovarian cancer is diagnosed, treated and researched within New Zealand.
The full report is available here: Ovarian Cancer National Report – Steps To Save Lives.
Some of the content in the report makes for difficult reading, and it may be triggering for some people. 1737 is a free counselling service available 24/7 if you need to talk to someone about the emotions the report raises.
What happens next?
The Health Select Committee is gathering feedback from relevant ministries and government agencies. Once this is complete, Cure Our Ovarian Cancer will have an opportunity to make a presentation in person to the committee.
We are also looking for volunteer advocates to visit their MP and share a copy of our report. If you would like to learn more please get in touch.
OCFNZ started as Cure Our Ovarian Cancer in 2018, with a focus on low-grade serous ovarian cancer. In 2020, we expanded our focus to include all ovarian cancer and, in 2024, we changed our name to the Ovarian Cancer Foundation New Zealand.
